Character Analysis/#33

In our group's adaptation, I'm going to play a 25-year-old Caroline based on the story Caroline's Wedding. Just as what the story says, Caroline was born in the United States and has only one arm. Different from the original story, in our adaptation Caroline is more emotional and sensitive. Her emotional feature leads her to have an intense argue with her mother.

As a young American girl, Caroline is relatively more "free-styled", comparing to her mother who remains the Haitian culture and traditions. It's important to notice that although Caroline's mother is a Haitian, Caroline herself is totally an American. The way Caroline talks is definitely "American"; and the form of the wedding with Eric, is not so satisfying as what her mother thinks. What Caroline wants is just to be what she likes to be and live the way that she desires without her mother's comments and critics. What she dislikes the most is when the mother keeps staying something negative towards Eric and the coming wedding because her mother wants Caroline to marry a Haitian but not a Bahamian; and she also thinks that it should be a formal proposal before Caroline get married with Eric. This cultural difference is the main reason why the mother and the daughter have such an argument before Caroline's wedding.

In our adaptation, I will try to find a way to portay Caroline's emotional figure. Based on the cultural difference, the stoy is also going to recall back to the old days (where Caroline's mother will show) and then have a ultimate resolution between the mother and the daughter. Our goal is to highlight the intense conflict as well as the consequent understanding and resolution.
